今日のひとこと：to learn the ropes / to get the hang of it

★get the hang of sth:

to learn how to do something, especially if it is not obvious or simple:

"I've never used this program before," "Don't worry, you'll soon get the hang of it."

★learn [know] the ropes

to learn/know how to do a job or activity

"How is your job?" "I'm still learning the ropes."

いや、まさにこれです(笑)。

"How's your tennis?" "I'm still learning the ropes."

ちなみに…英語に関しても、I'm still learning the ropes.　これ、永久に続くのでは…。。。

イギリスに来て半年以上経って、リスニングはやや向上した？のか、話を聞けばだいたい何言ってるかはわかるけど、ちょっとわかってないな～というのが１０～２０％はあって、そこは文脈や雰囲気でカバー。(笑)

テニスのレッスンも基本的には英語です。今日のレッスンで、その「わかってないな～という１～２割」に該当した単語がこちら。

いまいち、わかったような、わからないような。。。

英和辞典によると、

interception

①途中で捕らえる(奪う)こと、横取り　②（通信の）傍受　③遮断、妨害　

intercept

①途中で捕らえる、横取りする　②傍受する　③遮る　④迎撃する、邀撃する　

と説明されています。

今日、この単語を聞いた場面は、コーチがボレーを説明している場面。

あぁまさに、①の用法だ。the action of stopping and catching something

なるほど。どこかで聞いたような単語だったのに、まったく思い出せなかった。文脈やジェスチャーからも、何を伝えているのかまったくわからず、、、気になって調べました。(笑)

一つ勉強になりました。
